History
Handicapped Encounter Christ, (HEC), pronounced “heck,” is a Christian organization open to people of all faiths. Since its origin in NY in 1974, HEC retreats have been happening in the US, Asia, Australia, and Canada. HEC was brought to the Triangle in 1983 when a small group of Catholic people realized that our traditional retreats were not reaching everyone. Most retreat centers and even many churches are not equipped for people with disabilities. The group designed a weekend retreat program to spiritually enrich all participants while also meeting the needs of adults with physically disabilities. At HEC we see ourselves as part of Christ’s family coming together for healing and strength. We do this by offering two weekend retreats, and three social activities a year.
